Parks with a water view are all about timing. Mornings bring flat water, low sun and the dog-walkers; the hour before sunset is when the harbour light earns its keep. Regulars check the tide before setting out — low water exposes the mudflats that draw herons and oystercatchers, while a high tide turns the same view bright and blue. Weekends tend to fill the grass with sport, so if calm is the point, aim for a weekday morning or that dusk window. Few North Shore suburbs get a harbour outlook on their doorstep, but Beach Haven has one right on Beach Haven Road.
