Awaruku Bush Reserve is a pocket of native bush in Glenvar, on Auckland's North Shore, and it holds a strong 4.6 Google rating from visitors.
The North Shore's suburban reserves reward a little know-how. Stay on the formed track: in Auckland that protects shallow native roots and helps slow the spread of kauri dieback, so use the cleaning stations where they're provided. The bush is at its best early in the morning, when tūī and kererū are most active and the birdsong carries further than any traffic. Tracks can be muddy or root-tangled after rain, so grip-soled shoes are worth it, and dog rules vary from reserve to reserve, so check the sign at the gate.
Tucked away in a quiet corner of Glenvar, it is the sort of leafy retreat that makes the North Shore's suburbs so liveable.
