Mama Loco is Auckland's little slice of Mexico on the North Shore, sitting inside Westfield Albany on Don McKinnon Drive. The brief is simple and cheerfully worn on its sleeve: bold flavours, colourful cocktails and the kind of margaritas that have a habit of turning one drink into three. The menu takes its cue from the street food of the Americas and is made for sharing — tacos, burritos, loaded nachos and fresh Mexican favourites, backed by great music and a laid-back fiesta vibe.
In the kitchen, Street Shares like elote corn ribs, chilli con queso and Mama's tajin-dusted fried chicken lead into a big taco list (the birria beef, with its dipping sauce, is the showpiece), loaded nachos, quesadillas and bigger plates for solo appetites. There's a proper kids menu, a giant share platter for groups, and sweets from cinnamon-sugar churros to a sorbet trio. The bar is built on tequila and margaritas — classic, spicy, frozen and fruity — with tequila flights for the curious, plus sangria, wine, beer and a genuinely good zero-alcohol list.
Same venue, same team, now 100% independently owned and no longer part of Star Group. Daily deals run all week, functions and private events are hosted during and outside regular opening hours, and the welcome is the same whether you're celebrating something special or, as they say, just calling in because it's Tuesday.
Mama Loco occupies a bright corner of Auckland's North Shore food scene from its home inside Westfield Albany on Don McKinnon Drive. The concept is right there on the sign — street food, done better, with margs, mates and good vibes filling in the rest. It is Auckland's little slice of Mexico, a place built on bold flavours, colourful cocktails and, in the venue's own words, the kind of margaritas that have a habit of turning one drink into three.
Worth knowing up front: the venue is now 100% independently owned, with the same team running the show and no longer part of Star Group. What you get is a local crew doing things their own way.
The menu takes its inspiration from the street food of the Americas, and it is deliberately made for sharing. The Street Shares section sets the tone: guacamole with corn chips and salsa roja, chilli con queso under a scatter of fried jalapeños, polenta chips with chipotle aioli, and Mama's fried chicken with tajin seasoning and cilantro mayo. Elote corn ribs come dressed in burnt onion crema with formaggio snow, chipotle beef wontons arrive five to a plate with warm queso, and the loaded papas bravas pile chilli con queso and xnipec salsa over crisp potatoes. For the full spread, Mama's Platter gathers wings, polenta chips, corn ribs, wontons, fried chicken, corn chips, fries and all the dips in one go.
Tacos come two to a serve on flour tortillas with Mama's slaw and a chilli-lime wedge — corn tortillas are an easy swap. The line-up runs from picante jackfruit with vegan mayo and beet chutney, to tajin fried chicken, pork chicharron with three chilli sauce and pineapple salsa, and prawns tatemada with mango crema. The birria beef tacos are the one to beat: beef brisket and colby jack cheese on corn tortillas with slaw, onion, coriander and a birria dipping sauce for proper dunking.
Nachos are a team sport too — barbacoa beef, picante jackfruit with black beans or chilli lime prawns, all served with corn chips, queso and guacamole. Quesadillas come with chilli queso, charred onion, black beans and sour cream, in ancho chicken, beef brisket or chimichurri mushroom. Anyone flying solo is looked after in the Bigger Bites section: a fried chicken burger with bacon, pickles and con queso; a black bean burger; the Cali burrito stuffed with shredded chilli-lime lamb; a mercado quinoa bowl; and Pollo Loco — chicken breast with chimichurri, salsa verde rice, corn ribs and macha fire sauce. There's a full kids menu as well — chicken tacos, quesadillas, nachos, fries, churros and sundaes — which makes it a genuinely easy family dinner.
The bar is where Mama Loco really struts. Margaritas lead, built on El Jimador tequila: the Classic; Spicy Mama with its jalapeño and chilli twist; the Pornstar with Malibu, apple and passionfruit; a Margarita Mule; an Aperol version; Spicy Watermelon; Guava + Coconut; and Devils, which folds red wine into the mix. Frozen margaritas rotate through a flavour of the day, and the taster trio lets you sample three at once. Tequila drinkers can go deeper with flights from El Jimador, Jose Cuervo 1800, Don Ramon and Herradura.
Beyond the margs there's sangria by the glass or jug, sparkling, whites, rosé and reds, tap and packaged beer, ciders and RTDs. The zero-alcohol list is a proper menu rather than an afterthought, with a pineapple margarita and Tommy's margarita on Lyre's agave blanco, house sodas like Mango Fandango and Just Peachy, 0% RTDs and alcohol-free beers.
Daily deals run all week — frozen marg specials on weeknights, frozen marg tasties, a Sol bucket deal and Mama's lunch and night deals — so it's worth checking before you visit. Functions are a big part of the venue too: colourful, flexible spaces for birthdays, work parties, dinners and full-venue celebrations, available during and outside regular opening hours.
A few practical notes. Monday is the one closed day; Tuesday opens at 5pm, midweek service runs from midday, Friday and Saturday go from midday until late, and Sunday wraps at 5pm. The kitchen handles common allergens and can't guarantee an allergen-free environment, so tell the team about any dietary needs — the menu is tagged for vegetarian, vegan and other requirements. A 2% surcharge applies to credit card and contactless payments, and tables can be booked online.
The vibe, ultimately, is the point: great music, good people and a laid-back fiesta feel. Catch up with friends, celebrate something special or, as the team puts it, simply call in because it's Tuesday — they'll take care of the rest.
