Swiftsure is a South Island bistro and cellar door found above Buckingham Green on Arrow Lane in Arrowtown, from the team behind Waiheke Island's Man O' War. It's the restaurant home of Swiftsure Vineyards, a newer wine collection spanning Marlborough and Bannockburn.
The bistro is set up for long, relaxed lunches, with a fire to settle by and a terrace for those who'd rather enjoy the view with a glass of wine. It's described as a place to bring the kids early, before the evening settles into a slower, more grown-up pace.
On the wine list are Swiftsure's own labels: a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris, and a Bannockburn Rosé and Pinot Noir, all grown on the vineyard's sub-alpine sites in the South Island. Swiftsure is open Wednesday to Sunday, serving lunch through to late.
Above Buckingham Green in Arrowtown, tucked along Arrow Lane, sits Swiftsure — a bistro and cellar door born from Waiheke Island's well-known Man O' War winery. Where Man O' War has spent over three decades making wine on Waiheke's rugged eastern coastline, Swiftsure carries that same pioneering spirit south, into Marlborough and Bannockburn.
Swiftsure describes itself as a bold new chapter from Man O' War, and the Arrowtown bistro is where that story is told in person. The space is built for settling in: a long lunch, a seat by the fire on a cold Central Otago day, or a spot on the terrace with a glass of wine and a view. It's also a place the team describes as welcoming to families early in the day, before the room shifts into its later, quieter rhythm.
Swiftsure's wine list centres on its own label, grown across two very different South Island sites. From Marlborough comes a Sauvignon Blanc and a Pinot Gris, sourced from the Southern Coast Vineyard in the region's southernmost sub-region, in the shadow of the Kaikoura Ranges. The cooler coastal climate and sea breezes there lead to lower yields and more concentrated flavours.
From Bannockburn comes the Rosé and Pinot Noir, grown on a 5.15-hectare vineyard dedicated exclusively to Pinot Noir. Planted on an elevated, north-facing terrace above the Kawarau River, the site's mix of schist, windblown loess and sandy loam, combined with Central Otago's semi-arid climate, is behind the wine's structure and elegance.
The wines are made by Duncan McTavish, who has spent over a decade at the helm of Man O' War's winemaking on Waiheke Island. Duncan trained at Lincoln University before completing vintages in France, Germany, Australia and the United States, eventually settling at Man O' War in 2008. Viticulturist Sam Taylor, who joined Man O' War in 2009, relocated south with his family to lead the vineyard operations behind Swiftsure, while continuing to keep an eye on the original Waiheke vineyards.
Swiftsure's mascot is the rock wren, a tiny alpine bird endemic to the South Island and found throughout the Southern Alps — New Zealand's only true alpine bird, chosen as a nod to the rugged, high-country landscapes where Swiftsure's vineyards sit.
The Arrowtown bistro is open Wednesday to Sunday, serving lunch through to late, with an accessible entrance at 5 Berkshire Street. For restaurant bookings, events or work enquiries, Swiftsure can be reached directly by phone or email.
