Little & Local Bar & Bistro is a neighbourhood bistro and bar on Mahurangi East Road in Snells Beach, serving the Algies Bay end of the coast under the banner #Loving our Locals. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 9pm, it covers lunch through dinner with a kitchen that makes everything fresh on the premises, cooked to order.
The menu runs wide: coastal starters like green-lipped mussel fritters, seafood chowder and calamari; grills such as scotch fillet, lamb rump, pork belly and a Jack Daniel venison; plus pasta, burgers, pizzas and a dessert bar with a cast-iron Brownie Sizzler. Dishes are marked for vegetarian, dairy-free and gluten-free options, and gluten-free pizza bases are available.
The bar was stocked the hands-on way — the team sampled a varied assortment of wines and pours only their favourites, and will happily recommend a glass. Alongside wine there are tap and bottled beers, proper cocktails, mocktails, thick shakes, juices and soft drinks, with spirits and liqueurs on request.
Because everything is cooked fresh to order, the team asks diners with dietary requirements to chat with them when ordering. They offer gluten-free meals where they can, though they're upfront that gluten products in the kitchen mean zero cross-contamination can't be guaranteed. Bookings and takeaways can be made by phone or email, and online ordering is available.
Little & Local Bar & Bistro sits on Mahurangi East Road in Snells Beach, serving the Algies Bay end of the coast under the tagline #Loving our Locals. It's a neighbourhood spot in the truest sense: a bistro kitchen that cooks everything fresh to order, attached to a bar with a carefully chosen wine list, tap beer, proper cocktails and a genuinely good non-alcoholic lineup. Doors open Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 9pm, covering lunch right through dinner.
Everything on the menu is made fresh on the premises and cooked when you order it. That has a practical upside for anyone with dietary needs — the team asks you to discuss requirements with them and works around what they can. They're honest about gluten, too: gluten-free meals are offered wherever possible, but because gluten products are used in the kitchen, zero cross-contamination can't be guaranteed. Dishes are marked for vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free, and gluten-free pizza bases are available.
Being this close to the water, the starters lean coastal. Mussel fritters bind chopped green-lipped mussels in a homemade-spice batter, served with lime aioli and sweet chilli sauce; the seafood chowder is a creamy bowl of fish, clams, shrimp or scallops; and there's crispy calamari, a chilled shrimp cocktail and fried chicken strips with sriracha aioli.
Mains run from surf to turf. The scotch fillet arrives cooked to your preferred doneness with mash, seasonal vegetables and a choice of mushroom sauce, red wine jus, cider jus or garlic butter. The battered fish and chips — beer-battered, with fries, side salad and homemade tartare — is billed as a classic done right. Lamb rump comes spice-rubbed with garlic mash and red wine jus, pork belly is served crispy with brown gravy, and the Jack Daniel venison pairs tenderloin with a whisky sauce. Round out the list with Asian-style roast duck, chilli prawns, a sticky Asian chicken bowl, chicken parmigiana and a traditional Greek salad topped with a big block of feta.
Bistro staples are well covered. Fettuccine comes with grilled chicken or a marinara mix of seafood in garlic-parmesan cream, alongside a beef bolognese, a vegetable penne and a proper carbonara with bacon, mushroom and cracked pepper. Burgers — beef, lamb, crumbed chicken or falafel — all arrive with cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, the house secret burger sauce and fries, with egg or bacon add-ons. Pizzas run from a cheesy garlic and the vegetarian Original Italian with basil pesto, feta and olives, to grilled chicken, a double-ham Tropical Hawaiian and The Meat Madness stacked with beef, ham and pepperoni.
Desserts are a proper event here. The Brownie Sizzler lands on a hot cast-iron plate with vanilla ice cream and chocolate ganache; there's also apple and peach crumble, a warm Waffle Sunday, chocolate tiramisu cake, strawberry cheesecake, caramel slice and a sharp lemon tart. And the coffee doesn't end with dinner: the Stirred with Spirit list adds an affogato with Frangelico, Baileys or Kahlua, plus Irish and Baileys coffees.
The drinks list was assembled the fun way — the team sampled a varied assortment of wines and pours only their favourites, so it's worth asking the service team for a recommendation. The taps pour Carlsberg, Asahi and Boundary Road Brewery Hazy, while the fridge holds Sawmill IPA and Pilsner, Heineken including the 0%, Peroni, Corona, Stella Artois, Steinlager, Speight's Old Dark and Somersby cider. Cocktails are classics done plainly: a salt-rimmed margarita, an egg-white whisky sour, an espresso martini, a pina colada and a basil smash. Non-drinkers get Banana Mumma and Strawberry Lush mocktails, thick shakes, juices and soft drinks, and a wider range of spirits and liqueurs is available on request.
